The Coburg succession

June 22, 1899

The New York Times reports today that "it has been definitely decided" that the young Duke of Albany, Queen Victoria's grandson, will succeed as the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, following the "expected abdication" of the Duke of Edinburgh, and the renunciation by the Duke of Connaught and his son, Prince Arthur.

I remember reading a book long ago about the tutor of the then infant Duke of Albany who was to become the Duke of Saxe Coburg Gotha. I found it to be extremely sad.

It appears that the life of that Duke was extremely difficult and sad.

I wonder how his sister born Princess Alice of Albany, died I think in late 1981, as Princess Alice of Athlone coped with all of this. Princess Alice's only daughter May, was very very popular in Australia. Princess Alice and her daughter May Abel-Smith had to confront terrible tragedies

I hope that I have written an accurate reflection.

Alice wrote her memoirs, For my Grand Children - a good place to start.
